Ministry Spotlight: Friends Ice Cream and Coffee

The Sweet News

On May 11, 2024, our friends at Kingsland Baptist Church in Katy, Texas, completed an expansion of its Special Needs ministry with the grand opening of Friends Ice Cream and Coffee. More than just a new addition to the campus, this inviting shop is nestled in the northeast corner of the church’s property, creating an ideal space to unwind as the crisp fall air settles in.

But the impact of this shop reaches far beyond its colorful lawn chairs and cozy tables. Its mission truly sets it apart. Besides its delicious treats, Friends Ice Cream and Coffee focuses on providing meaningful employment for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. One employee shared, “Friends Ice Cream and Coffee employs 14 special needs adults.  Without the Special Needs Ministry, we would not have a shop, and these special friends would not be employed.  So, it’s integral to the ministry that God has set before us.”

What Sounds Good?

When you step into Friends Ice Cream and Coffee, friendly staff welcome you and are eager to guide you through the menu. Whether you’re in the mood for something classic or adventurous, the shop offers a range of handcrafted ice cream flavors, including Cookies and Cream, Chocolate with Brazilian Fudge, and the unique Habanero Pineapple Crunch. Created by award-winning Brazilian ice cream artisans Allan and Maisa Velasque, these flavors cater to various palates. As one staff member noted, “The chef’s favorite can change even daily,” ensuring there’s always something new to try. If ice cream isn’t your preference, don’t worry; there are plenty of other options. The menu includes refreshing non-dairy sorbets, specialty coffees like Affogato, Cold Brew, and Chai, and shakes and smoothies, all perfect for Katy’s warm days.

Fun for Everyone

But the experience goes well beyond great food and drinks. The Friends Community Playground is adjacent to the coffee shop, open to the public every day except Sunday. The playground is designed with inclusivity in mind and features a charming miniature town complete with a house, school, hospital, and church. A fully accessible merry-go-round ensures children of all abilities can join the fun.

For added excitement, the playground offers interactive panels that can be digitally activated via smartphone, creating an engaging experience for visitors of all ages. This thoughtful design invites families to explore and enjoy in a hands-on way.

A Welcoming Space

With plenty of tables scattered throughout the café, Friends Ice Cream and Coffee has become a gathering place for ministers, employees, and students, providing a space to study, read, work, or relax. It’s a community hub where people from different walks of life can connect and enjoy each other’s company in a warm, inviting environment.

In essence, Friends Ice Cream and Coffee is much more than a stop for sweet treats; it’s a heartwarming destination where community, inclusion, and connection come together. Whether you’re enjoying a handcrafted ice cream, sipping on a specialty coffee, or watching children explore the inclusive playground, this spot has something for everyone. It truly enriches the fabric of the Katy community.
